Are you ready for the new 2021 ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Standards? If not, we have Gary Kent back again to walk us through the revisions to the optional Table A items. He recently spoke with Tim Burch on the changes and tips on how to make them be most effective for relaying information to your client. Gary also provides some history behind a few of the items and how the list has evolved for the upcoming standard. We have a few short weeks until the new standard becomes the norm, so join us on a fascinating discussion during a truly “Table A Talk” here on “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
Dr. Michael Dennis, a geodesist and State Plane Coordinate System 2022 Project Manager for NGS, joins us to talk about the deprecation of the US Survey Foot and adoption of the “The Foot” at the end of 2021. This action is in conjunction with the realization of the North American Terrestrial Reference Frame or NATRF of 2022.

This edition of “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” proudly brings a new series named “What is Surveying?” and will feature guests from all corners of the globe explaining what defines today’s surveying profession. The inaugural episode brings a titan of the GIS community, Mr. Brent Jones, URISA President-Elect. He currently oversees Esri’s worldwide strategic planning, business development, and marketing activities for land records, cadastre, surveying, and land administration. Brent recently joined our own President-Elect, Tim Burch, to discuss how technology has led to widespread geospatial data usage, advancements in the cadastral layer, and how a licensed surveyor measures up with a geographic information system professional (GISP).
This latest offering from the NSPS headquarters starts strong with Brent but look for more great guests very soon. Thanks for listening and how your own definition of surveying compares to other industry stalwarts. We hope to help answer the question of “What is Surveying” right here on the latest episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
The age old question for our storied profession has consistently been for (literally) centuries, “What does a surveyor do?” Whether it be for an audience of fellow professionals (engineers, architects, etc.) or John Q. Public, the surveying profession has struggled with telling our story of who we are and what we do. This week’s episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast asked that question during the Florida Surveying & Mapping Society (FSMS) Conference and ended up with a great conversation with Melissa Seitzinger, Project Development Manager for LJA Surveying in Tallahassee, FL. Melissa and Tim Burch sat down to discuss the challenges of “selling surveying” to not just those who may need our services, but to parents and their children who could potentially be our next generation of geospatialists. They also identified the ways surveyors can improve their communication, refine their presentation skills, and have a short “elevator speech” primed and ready for connecting with non-surveyors.
A big thanks to the FSMS staff for a great conference and giving us space to record this excellent conversation. Thanks for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast and subscribe wherever you listen to your audio selections.
Please take the time to listen to this episode! Learn more about the future leaders of our organization. Join host Tim Burch as he interviews the two candidates for Secretary.
This week's episode of "Surveyor Says! THe NSPS Podcast" gives us an opportunity to chat with a true adventurer of a surveyor. John Brady, owner of Bradis in Fairbanks, Alaska, has been sharing his worksites throughout the Last Frontier for several years. Our host, Tim Burch, recently chatted with John to discuss surveying in remote places, preparing for wildlife that can kill you, and dealing with the bitter cold. A great conversation you don't want to miss so check it out today!
This episode of “Table A Talk” covers the current schedule of the process of review and updating of the latest ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Minimum Standards. NSPS Executive Director Curt Sumner and Gary Kent, the chair of the ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Committee, also discuss recent conversations regarding Item 19, Offsite Easements, and how these types of easements are intended to be addressed. If you have any questions for Gary, leave your comments here and we will do our best to address them.
Joe Fenicle shares with host Curt Sumner his experiences/adventures in surveying, and recently “going home” to join the faculty of the surveying program at the University of Akron.
Is Lyme the only disease ticks carry? The answer is a big “No”, but Lyme does deserve a lot of PR for many reasons. The CDC claims that there are about 400,000 new cases each year in the United States. To put that in perspective, that is 1.5 times the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and 6 times the number of people diagnosed with AIDS each year. During the last 25 years the New England area has seen a 300% increase in Lyme cases, and some of the upper mid-west Great Lakes states have seen a 250% increase during the same period of time.
The most important thing to remember is that if by chance someone is bitten by a tick and experiences a bad reaction to the bite, such as achy joints, flu-like symptoms, maybe a bulls-eye rash, etc. do not put off seeing a doctor!!! Early detection and treatment is absolutely critical. Proper treatment is normally with antibiotics which usually fixes it in the early stages. Remember, though, these diseases never go away on their own, they only get worse.

Sliding doors and two seconds of separation lay between my guest this week and myself.
Digital Data was deeply discussed in this episode. My guest, Brett Casson, who is the Senior Principal Major Projects, Autodesk Australia was born in Tamworth, before moving to Jervis Bay, actually Huskisson... (YES MY HOME TOWN, well right next door!!!) before completing his HSC at Shoalhaven High (YES MY HIGH SCHOOL, we would have even caught the school bus together...) began his career in Canberra in 1993 while completing his Associate Diploma of Surveying at Canberra Institute of Technology. Working in Canberra before moving to the big smoke (Sydney) to gain more experience in the surveying industry.
We talk about where his career took him traveling across the world and meet some very interesting people and projects. About lifelong learning, helping people and what it’s like working with companies to help streamline and embed Autodesk products into the business. The importance of Cloud based storage. Working globally managing time zones, accents, and how we harness the data and manage the assets.
Data sharing, Data storage, Custodians, Digital efficiencies, and reform were discussed along with a Co-ordination approach of all agencies for procurement methodologies for information standards.
He love to spend quality down time with his wife & two girls as well as playing golf and riding his ummm nice bikes!
And I want to know do robots dream of electric sheep? Have you ever read that book???
