Shane Neeley and Connor Brown are the hosts of “The Shane & Connor Show,” proudly presented by our affiliate and good friends at the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS). The duo recently connected with our own President-Elect, Tim Burch, to discuss how their webinar/podcast came to fruition and how giving back to the profession has become a focus point in their careers. Shane and Connor share their stories of getting started in surveying, how the profession is different in Texas versus the surrounding states, and how being involved in TSPS has provided them with personal relationships that have lasted a lifetime. They also share the importance of strong mentorship and how being open and available for those opportunities from both sides of a career-building relationship is key to enhancing one’s career.
This is a fun conversation with the “Abbott & Costello” of Texas surveying; a lighthearted talk full of wisdom and knowledge sprinkled throughout the laughs. NSPS appreciates the efforts from Shane & Connor (and TSPS!) so give their shows a listen (https://www.tsps.org/page/theshaneconnorshow). As the FIG Congress 2022 winds down and the conference goers head for the exits, we felt it was a good time to bring another excellent guest to “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” and we found ourselves a great one. Claire Buxton, an FIG Young Surveyor and past leader of the Volunteer Community Surveyor Program (VCSP), joined Tim Burch to talk about the Congress, expansion within the FIG YSN, and exciting days ahead in the surveying profession. Originally from New Zealand and now practicing in Canada, Claire shared her perspective on being a young surveyor working as a Project Manager above the Arctic Circle and how mentoring has become a big part of her daily job. She also talked about the importance of the surveyor’s role within the VCSP and training young practitioners to help establish cadastral areas within developing countries. Claire and Tim also touched upon how diversity in surveying is important to its growth, and how roles within the profession have changed drastically within the last generation.

Professional surveyors are well aware of the duties that go with being licensed; protection of the public’s safety, health, welfare, and property as related to boundaries and correctly prepared legal descriptions. The public itself, and the governmental officials they elect, often do not realize the importance of the professional land surveyor. Today’s episode of “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” covers the topic of why licensure of surveyors is critical to public safety while attempts to include surveying in license deregulation will harm many aspects of property ownership and accurate descriptions. Our roundtable discussion includes Curt Sumner (NSPS Executive Director), Gary Kent (longtime ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Chair), and Tim Burch (NSPS President-Elect) talk about how licensing varies nationwide, the multitude of land systems, and how the educational requirements must be a significant component in the path to licensure.
High precision measurement has become the norm thanks to technology, but surveyors are relied upon for their accuracy in establish, retracement and legal descriptions of real property. This discussion establishes several good talking points for our practitioner to use when deregulation comes knocking at their door. This is one episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast you don’t want to miss!
