This week's episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast helps to explain the value of the Certified Survey Technician (CST) program from the perspective of an employee and future leader. Your host, Tim Burch, recently chatted with John Vrablec, CST III from just outside the Houston, Texas area. John shared his story discovering the CST program, working his way up to the Level III Construction certification, and becoming a role model for his staff. He shared the importance of proper training and certification in his world of high-definition scanning and modelling of mechanical and industrial facilities. Another great example of how surveying and geospatial careers transcends well beyond boundary retracement!
In the first Episode of the series “Get to know your NSPS Directors” Curt Sumner talks with Dick Kleinmann, NSPS Director representing the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors. This series will provide insight into the fact that NSPS leaders are “just like other Surveyors”, and have chosen to dedicate time to help guide our national society in its endeavors on behalf of the profession.
This session of the “Future Focus” series features Jocelyn Correa, a licensed surveyor from California. She recently talked with Tim Burch about making the early transition from architectural student to cadastral mapper and leading into discovering her love for surveying. Jocelyn shared her experiences with chasing boundary retracement, tying it together with UAV and topographic data with the appropriate quality checks, to create surveys that provide great information and value to the client. She also spoke about how a welcoming work environment adds to the overall positive experience as a surveyor. Jocelyn adds that mentoring is an important factor to the success of all surveyors, so keeping the channels open for learning opportunities is vital.
Another great episode on “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast, so thank you for joining us!
This episode will introduce you to our latest series of discussions simply named “The Young Surveyor’s Network Edition” and will feature many aspects of millennial survey professionals and technicians. Our guest is Eric Salovitch, Chair of the NHLSA Young Surveyors, discussing their recent project to determine the elevation at the top of Mount Tecumseh, a peak in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
Recent aerial surveys using LiDAR technology was used to determine the peak was 3,995 feet, not the 4,003 feet previously determined by the United States Coast Survey in the mid 1800’s. This new elevation determination puts the peak at risk of being dropped off the famed 4,000 Footers list within New Hampshire.
Eric and his fellow NHLSA Young Surveyors set out to measure the peak using modern surveying equipment and methods to confirm the elevation. This episode talks about how the Young Surveyors began and conquered their quest of Mt. Tecumseh.
And we are back!
After a well deserved break from the madness that was the FIG Working Week 2023, it is appropriate that our first episode features an outstanding Young Surveyor who participated in her first FIG event. Your host, Tim Burch, recently chatted with Ashley Metz, Surveying Technician II at M.J. Engineering and Land Surveying in Albany, New York, and reminisced about the wonderful and upbeat atmosphere at the Working Week in Orlando. Ashley's attendance to FIG was supported by NYSAPLS and she was everywhere, including volunteering her time to help NSPS with hosting duties at several functions. She shared her experiences on networking with Young Surveyors from around the world, and how surveying covers many more tasks and responsibilities than in the US. Ashley and Tim also talked about participating in the "Connect & Reflect" mental health discussion group and how often surveyors don't look after their mental wellbeing.
Look for lots more great things in the future from this talented and eager surveyor!
