NSPS Government Affairs Consultant John Palatiello and NSPS Lobbyist JB Byrd join host Curt Sumner to review the successes NSPS has enjoyed during its 2020 legislative and federal agency outreach.
Happy National Surveyor’s Week!
Our guest this week is Galen Scott from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS). As the Constituent Resources Manager, Galen is involved with many of the tools and programs going on within NGS. He chatted recently with Tim Burch about the GPS on Benchmarks program and how important having crowdsourced data is for completing the geoid base for the 2022 datum changes. Galen also announced the new features to the OPUS programs, including a simplified way for bluebooking significant control stations AND the feature to upload RTK data to incorporate with your OPUS solutions. Lots of great stuff coming out of Silver Spring!
This is the first in a new series with Galen and lots of great things from NGS so stay tuned for even more! Thanks again for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.

Curt Sumner, Executive Director, NSPS, had three separate interviews with the candidates for Vice President in the upcoming NSPS Elections. All three candidates shared their background and views on what makes a successful organization and can help you to decide how you will vote.
This week’s recording marks the 200th episode of the “Surveyor Says!” podcast and rather than look back at where we have been, we decided to look ahead to the future of surveying. And who better to have as our guests than the current Young Surveyors Network officers, Nolan Mark, President, Cam Lowe, Vice President, and Spencer McCutcheon, Secretary.
They were all gracious enough to take some time out of their busy schedules to talk with me about what is going on right now in the profession, what are the positives we have going for us, and what the future of surveying looks like from their perspective.
A great conversation you do not want to miss!
Chalk up another great conversation with a true role model! Our chat this week for Episode 99 of “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” is with Virginia Winberg, a PLS from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, (Minnesota, for those who don’t know that tidbit). Tim Burch sat down with Virginia to talk about her involvement in the Women’s Survey Summit AND the Future Surveyor’s Foundation with our previous “Surveyor Says!” guests, Anna Rios (EP21) and Heather Sides (EP95). She also shared her recent experience at the Minnesota State Fair (exhibiting for 12 days!) and spreading the survey gospel to fair goers. Virginia talked about what makes a great mentor and how we need to continue to give back to our wonderful profession.
Thank you for tuning into this episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast and keep watching social media for our announcements regarding Episode 100 and cool prizes!

This episode will introduce you to our latest series of discussions simply named “The Young Surveyor’s Network Edition” and will feature many aspects of millennial survey professionals and technicians. Our guest is Eric Salovitch, Chair of the NHLSA Young Surveyors, discussing their recent project to determine the elevation at the top of Mount Tecumseh, a peak in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
Recent aerial surveys using LiDAR technology was used to determine the peak was 3,995 feet, not the 4,003 feet previously determined by the United States Coast Survey in the mid 1800’s. This new elevation determination puts the peak at risk of being dropped off the famed 4,000 Footers list within New Hampshire.
Eric and his fellow NHLSA Young Surveyors set out to measure the peak using modern surveying equipment and methods to confirm the elevation. This episode talks about how the Young Surveyors began and conquered their quest of Mt. Tecumseh.
This week’s episode went from collecting a few sound bites about ongoing legislative efforts from our NSPS Lobbyist, JB Byrd, to a full-blown recording! We caught up with him on a late Friday afternoon to provide “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast and boy, are we glad we did! JB chatted with Executive Director Tim Burch about the ongoing Ligado saga, their presentation to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) panel that will be included in the upcoming published NAS report, and legislative outreach during the mid-term election campaigns.
Once again, it was a pleasure to hear JB provide great insight into the sometimes-aggravating world of US politics. Thank you for tuning into this great conversation with JB & Tim on this episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
