Listen in to our Sunday night LIVE interview from Cairns.
I got to sit down and have an impromptu chat with Jemma Picco, Registered Cadastral Surveyor (Land Surveyor) and her role as the Principal Surveyor at the Department of Resources in Queensland. Amongst all things surveying we also discussed the importance of mentoring formal or informal and being in the position of role model for younger surveyors. We talked about finding old trees and survey marks from surveys in the far north of Australia to managing a team of surveyors.
Growing up in Brisbane, attending an all girls school where her careers advisor handed her a book and said look in this section to find you career... From there Jemma attended Queensland University of Technology completing a double degree.
Turning right instead of left was the critical point in Michaels surveying career. Michael is a now retired Registered Surveyor and Town Planner with a wealth of experience gained as a private consultant practicing throughout New South Wales, particularly the North Coast region, for over 40 years. He has considerable experience in the land development process, taking many projects from concept design through to completion. From early on Michael knew that he was going to be a manager & run his own company. That company, RESOURCE DESIGN & MANAGEMENT just won an award for the Small Consultancy Category at the Surveying Consultancy Excellence Awards 2021 for Consulting Surveyors National. He is passionate about his work and encourages everyone to continually strive for excellence in their work. Michael is currently a Board Member of the Association of Consulting Surveyors NSW and the NSW Board of Surveying and Spatial Information. Previously he has been a Director of the Institution of Surveyors NSW, Chairman of the North Coast Group of the Institution and Chairman of the North Coast Chapter of the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). He is a guest town planning examiner with the NSW Board of Surveying and Spatial Information and has also been heavily involved in the training and education of surveying candidates aspiring to achieve registration with the Board. In my very first face to face interview... shall I say I was very nervous!!
I wasn’t sure if this conversation was going to be had, with the rival of Holden & Ford… But we’re grown adults & put our personal beliefs aside lol.
Tim is the Director of Locate & Map in Sydney specialising in Subsurface Utility mapping . Tim is a second gen surveyor and growing up he always wanted to be a surveyor by taking after his dad, although he did spend some time as directional driller. He has been in the industry for 15 years beginning his career with Lean Lackenby and Hayward & RMS.
Tim and his Team just celebrated 7 years of business, very exciting!!!
We discussed the importance of culture within the business, the average age of his team, at 35 he is OLD, and the importance of inclusiveness and responsibility within the company. Data sharing in the locating industry, Implementation of 3d drain scanning, point cloud data, awareness of emerging technology, coding, mental health, kids, cars, podcasts & more cars. Dave & Adam from Surv3D were mentioned as was Paul & Geoff from Locators, Gordon Bell & Grant Kilpatrick (RIP), Two legends of the Surveying Industry.
With a lot of laughs along the way.
Tim and his team are proud supporters of the Rural Fire Service. If you can help or support them every little bit helps. https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/

ATTENTION SURVEYORS!
ALTA/NSPS LAND TITLE SURVEY STANDARDS ARE HERE TO PROTECT YOU!
A recent inquiry from a surveying professional posed the following question: can a plat be titled a "ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey" without doing any field work? We bring in our resident Land Title Survey expert, Mr. Gary Kent, to pose this question and others as surveyors nationwide are under fire for cheaper surveys and quicker turnaround times.
No, you are NOT the only surveyor to refuse to do something unethical on a survey, so listen in on Gary's advice on how to deal with unreasonable clients and requests. Doing anything else may up costing your license and career.
This “Future Focus” episode features one of the best stories so far told on the “Surveyor Says!” podcast. A recently minted CST Level 1, Steve Holliger knew nothing about surveying a few short years ago when recruited for a utility mapping job. After helping Ben Shinabery and the QK4 team complete the daunting task, he stuck around to learn more about the profession and began the road to a fulfilling career. Your host, Tim Burch, NSPS President-Elect, recently talked with Steve and Ben to discuss how surveying came into both of their lives and how the CST program has given Steve incentive to become a great surveyor. The intrigue of surveying (and benefits of the NSPS CST Program) highlight this great episode of “Surveyor Says!” the NSPS Podcast.
This episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast finds your host, Executive Director Tim Burch “on the road” from Essen, Germany wrapping up a trip to Intergeo 2022. In keeping with the theme of Women’s History Month, our very special guest for this episode is Juliana Blackwell, Director of the National Geodetic Survey (NGS). She recently talked with Tim Burch to share her career path leading up to her current position at the helm of the nation’s oldest federal science agency. From her days on a NOAA research ship, in the field with a survey crew collecting geodetic information, to the floor of the United Nations coordinating geopotential reference frames, Juliana’s story is fascinating and inspiring. She reiterates the importance of the need for upgrading the national spatial reference system (NSRS) to steer our future of autonomous guidance.
We are proud of our partnership with Juliana and NGS, so thanks for listening to this episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
